Smart Design Studio was founded by William Smart in 1998. The studio’s approach to design is holistic, combining both architectural and interior design with passionate attention to detail. Over the past 23 years, Smart Design Studio has delivered a wide range of projects ranging from large-scale master planning, cultural buildings, offices, workplaces to private houses and product design. Although varied in scale, the projects are united by an ethos of “Architecture from the Inside Out”.
The SDS team consists of 40 staff spread across five separate teams. While each team has its own area of specialisation, they share knowledge and work together at critical stages of the design process, allowing the expertise of one team to influence the designs of others. Their focus is on getting great buildings built, applying experience in design and documentation to each project, whilst striving to introduce innovation and new concepts to continually invigorate the work. This approach creates a unique quality for each project and encourages continual growth in the Studio.
Smart Design Studio’s buildings have received critical acclaim. Their portfolio includes iconic projects such as the Rail Operations Centre in Alexandria, Connor at Central Park, Indigo Slam, White Rabbit Art Gallery, and our own Studio. Since its inception, SDS has received over 40 international and national awards for architecture, urban design, and interior design. William was also the recipient of Inde Awards Luminary Award.
CARBON NEUTRAL CERTIFICATION
To become carbon neutral Smart Design Studio undertook the following process:
- Commissioned a NoCO2 audit from CRI to measure their carbon footprint for the period April 1st, 2020 – March 31st, 2021. CRI’s NoCO2 audit follows the standards outlined by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (1), in addition to the international standard ISO 14064.1 (2).
- Have committed to offset their unavoidable emissions through the purchase of units in approved projects under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Gold Standard, and
- Committed to ongoing annual auditing of their emissions.
HOW DOES SMART DESGIN STUDIO OFFSET ITS EMISSIONS?
China Wind
The China Wind Project provides a renewable, clean energy source for power generation. Wind projects partially displace electricity currently generated from grid-connected conventional fossil fuel-based thermal power plants, thereby reducing overall emissions. Furthermore, by reducing harmful pollutants in the atmosphere, the China Wind Project also provides public health and local environmental benefits. Such projects also provide economic benefits through increased investment in renewable energy and employment opportunities.
